The design of sound measures for use in research, program evaluation, special education, classroom assessment, and statewide academic assessment has been a key thrust of my scholarship. I believe that one of the factors that impedes advances in social and educational research is that too little attention is paid to the central importance of high quality objective measurement as a critical part of such research. Even in the most rigorously designed studies, the quality of the results of the study will always be constrained by the quality of the measurement being used for data collection. Great design and advanced statistical analysis cannot save data that is not reliable, not objective, not valid, or not accurate. Blogs in this section will highlight strategies for improving measurement in education, health, and social science.
